Berty Albrecht (1893-1943) remains an enigma. She witnessed humanity’s worst excesses as a young nurse working in a hospital during the First World War where she cared for those whose bodies had been destroyed. She saw the surge of anti-humanist ideologies sweep across Europe provoking a new “war of civilisation.” And yet, she never despaired of humankind. She believed that it was possible to improve humanity. She believed that Europe could one day be united and peaceful. That is why she took up the feminist cause, welcomed anti-Nazi refugees and contributed to resisting the Vichy regime and its collaboration with the Third Reich. Her illustrious but gruelling journey ended in tragedy when she took her own life to avoid having to speak to her persecutors. This essay will recount the key moments of that journey.
