This essay is a critical reading of Vladimir Putin's article “On the historical unity of Russians and Ukrainians” (July 12, 2021). It proposes to show how Russian power instrumentalizes and falsifies history to justify the war against Ukraine, by denying the existence of a history and identity specific to this country. The historian's approach, however, takes a long-term view, allowing us to put this “denialism” into perspective, as it is part of a major trend in the Russian imagination, from Peter the Great to Stalin and Putin. This book originates from a course we created as part of the Jean Monnet “HistEuropa” Module. Thanks to the Jean Monnet Foundation in Lausanne, it is now available as an open access publication, making it a teaching tool for teachers and students.

We are in the process of having it translated into English for wider distribution.
